Porto represents 6.2% of overnight stays in the country
More and more tourists are also opting for the northern landscapes on summer holidays.
Between June and August 2019, the Northern Region received 1.8 million guests, 11% more than in the same period of 2018.
Statistics from INE also reveal that in four years, between 2015 and 2019, the number of guests registered in the Northern region in the summer months has skyrocketed by almost 50%. In the summer of 2015, the north of the country received 600,000 fewer guests than in June, July, and August 2019.
In the same time frame, only Azores surpass the North in terms of tourist growth, with a 65% rise. According to INE’s analysis, the region also leads the table of non-resident overnight stays since the beginning of the year, with a growth of 11.5%.
The municipality of Porto already represents 6.2% of the total overnight stays of tourists in the country, and 83% of these guests are foreigners. Between January and August, the number of overnight stays in Porto rose by almost 10%.
The North region also stands out for the weight of local accommodation, which is already worth 21% of all tourist nights. Only the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with 37%, has a higher value.
